Tribute to Layne Staley

OK, so it's regrettable that we are a day late with this post, but nevertheless it had to be done. All here at Nihilist have been Alice in Chains fans since we were tweens (although at the time there was no such word). And as every fan of AIC knows, everything about their early sound is damn near perfect, Jerry Cantrell's smoldering, sun burnt guitar, the late Mike Starr's throaty bass and Sean Kinney's infectious grooves. But standout even from all that wonderful stuff was Layne's utterly brilliant voice. Yesterday was his birthday, August 22nd 1967, unfortunately he passed away aged just 34 in 2002. Earlier this year, another original AIC member was lost too, Mike Starr, born Michael Christopher Starkey, died at 44.

Here's the younng Alice in Chains in their prime after their debut 'Facelift'.

Happy 44th B-day Layne Staley

  1. Layne changed my life with his insightful and surreal music and lyrics. I only wished he could have stuck around to make more to listen to for future generations. I was compelled to compose a portrait of him In Memoriam recently on the anniversary of his death on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/04/in-memoriam-kurt-cobain-and-lane-staley.html Drop in and tell me your memories of his music and how it’s affected you.
