B.A.N Digs... Godflesh Superstar

Plenty of films have been alleged to synchronise with music, the most famous (and falsest) or which is Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and The Wizard of Oz. However, a few years ago, Youtube user clayfranklin uploaded a rare example of an accidental synch up that is as near to perfect as you're likely to find: the unlikely pairing of the English Industrial band, Godflesh track 'Anthem' and the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

"I've worked in a video store for 2 years. After awhile I got bored of watching movies with their intended soundtrack. I noticed that Godflesh and Jesus Christ Superstar surpassed the occasional synch-up."

The whole video is quite consistently synched up, but to skip ahead to where things get spooky, go straight to 3.13 in. Enjoy!

B.A.N. Digs... Proto-Metal!

We love our history here at Nihilist, and music history is even better. A not very frequently explored part of that history are the early days of heavy music. I maintain my conviction that live music played on electric instruments sent through speakers under thousands of watts of power is often heavy by definition, but I'm gonna stick to the style of music here.

Despite how it looks at a casual glance, it wasn't just Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple who are to blame for such a lovely tradition of music, there are a handful of names that were big in their time but posterity has forgotten. I won't go into the bands too much and let the music speak for itself. The first, who are gaining a little recognition now are Blue Cheer. Here they are in 1968.

There is an unconfirmed story that the last two tracks recorded for their Inside Outside album were recorded at the bottom of Pier 57 in New York because they were kicked out of the studio for being far too loud.

Next up is a proper rock 'n' roll mess from the little known English band Edgar Broughton Band from 1970.

Next is another American band, Sir Lord Baltimore, with a savage mix of Hendrixesque psychedelia and quite modern sounding lead work. From the 1970 album Kingdom Come.

Next one is from the now reformed Scottish band Iron Claw, and if you were beginning to think that these last few tracks simply haven't been heavy enough, check this brutal fucker!

Finally we have one of the more recognised bands, Pentagram. Arguably the crucial Sabbath influence would have had a little time to settle in by 1972, but have a listen to this for some old-school Evil!

There are a huge range of names that I could mention but I think the few I have chosen are nicely representative.

Keep it free and heavy! Edward...

B.A.N Digs . . . .Cozmonaut Scotland!

And so it spreads .. . ..it seems the Desert has come to our celtic cousins in Scotland, with the advent of Cozmonaut Scotland, based in Edinburgh, another branch of the ever growing underground fuzz movement that is breeding an online community that the writers of this blog are very very proud to be part of.A Stoner rock promoter/blogger/DJ/enthusiast, Cozmonaut will be keeping those in the land of shortbread and good whiskey up to date on all the stoner rock happenings in that fair land.
Oh and if you're wondering about the header pic, I googled Scottish rock and that's what came up . . .. leave me alone, I'm craving sleep . . ...

B.A.N. Digs...FUZZ!!!

Given our usual taste in music this probably won't come as a surprise, but Born Again Nihilist is full of guitar players and we dig FUZZ! This is not just about fuzz, but we're giving a particular mention to Proguitarshop and ToneFactor for keeping us up-to-date on all the best in fuzz today. Here's a classic from Proguitarshop:

The Electro Harmonix Big Muff needs no introduction. What sets Proguitarshop apart is presenter, Andy's slick playing and endless knowledge of the workings of pedals. Here's a more boutique fuzz for your consideration, the Blackout Effectors Twosome Dual Fuzz.

Proguitarshop have just about any boutique gear your feet could want. ToneFactor like to keep their ear to the ground for even rarer finds and the more messed up sounding fx. Here's a favourite of mine, the Robot Factory White Russian: a tweaked-to-fuck take on the Russian Big Muff.

Gorgeous! Another brilliant part of ToneFactor's output is the tracks they record using several fx from the same manufacturer, called Pedal Parties. Here's a haunting piece of music made with Electro Harmonix pedals creating the luscious sound scapes. Beautiful! This has been Edward for Born Again Nihilist, enjoy your FUZZ!

When in doubt, DOOM it out!

B.A.N Digs...Fan Videos That REALLY Do Work!

Search for any moderately well known band on Youtube and you will finds a huge amount of music videos, made by fans for certain songs. Now, 99 out of 100 of these tend to be rubbish. The footage doesn't flow with the music, it doesn't capture the mood and may just be simply inappropriate to the song. I don't want to put a downer on the people who like to make these videos at all, I think it's a lovely demonstration of a labour of love. Some of these, however, stand out against the rest. Videos that have been inspired and well thought out, and I'm going to show you a few personal favourites now.

First up is ALEATTITUDE's video for Melvins 'A History of Bad Men', featuring footage from the film 'Sin City'.

The 'music-meets-movie' is probably the most common kind of fan-made video. Here's another, this one from CubicleWarfare666: High on Fires' 'Turk' meets 'Braveheart'.

I'm not the biggest fan of Braveheart but High on Fire music set to scenes of war is just gorgeous!
Next is The Hidden Hand's 'Vulcans Children' by Akultra, reposted by WINORULES, a channel that's always a joy to visit! A psychedelic, colourful sci-fi mind rush!

The oddly named scuranima made this stunning video for the Oceansize track 'Savant'. Taken from a scene from Disney's 'Fantasia'.

Finally, my personal best, fuzzjunky's video for Kyuss' 'Molten Universe'. Lovers of the majesty and sheer fuckin' BIGNESS of nature will love this one. A perfect example of getting the flow of the footage to match that of the music, therefore complimenting it and making for a fuller experience.

Well that's it for this B.A.N Digs. Savour these videos now because many have already been taken down since YouTube began cracking down on copyright infringement. Love them while you can!

Born Again Nihilist Digs...2D!

A wonderfully simple new series, intellectually named "B.A.N Digs...", where we offer up things we love and why we love them, whatever they may be. First up: 2D movies!

Mark Kermode predicts the end of the tyranny of 3D cinema and offers the evidence to support it. Thank Christ! Ever since Avatar I have been waiting and waiting for this industry pushed fad to run itself out and if Kermode is right then it's happening even sooner than expected. It was shit to begin with, quite frankly. I can honestly say I have never been wowed by any 3D film of the past few years and am very glad to see that audiences are now agreeing with their arses (that's a reference to the 'bums on seats' analogy, just to be clear!)

Enjoy your films in 2D. There are reasons why Kubrick, Herzog and the Coen Brothers have never used 3D and why Michael Bay does...
