EP Review- 30,000 Monkeys - 'Womb Eater Wife Beater'

Track Listing:

                     2- Loris' Terrify Lab
                     3- Wardimir
                     4-Stab You Elf
                     5-Plumbing On Steroids

Not for the faint hearted this one.30,000 Monkeys play a vile , rancorous brand of sludge/noise rock that recalls the most fucked up moments of grunge greats like Tad, Butthole Surfers and of course (the ) Melvins. There's also nods to the unhinged post punk fury of bands like The Jesus Lizard in their maelstrom of brutal riffing, all merging to create an oppressive atmosphere that weighs heavy on the senses, but provides just rewards.

Tracks like 'Wardimir' delight in ratcheting up the air of carnivalesque menace, a sure nod to (the) Melvins' mid nineties output, eerie, almost chanted vocals laid on thick over  fat stoner riffs and interspersed with various creepy guitar effects and the odd nod to space rock that gives the EP an edge on similar releases.Indeed , the overdriven bass combined with  slo-mo guitar abuse of tracks like 'Stab You Elf'  could be mistaken for a band that,  contrary to their press release  which claims the band "does not engage in subtlety" , are actually, underneath it all, closet prog nerds, with a fair knowledge of classic psyche and space rock.Closer 'Plumbing On Steroids', with its' cosmic bass overtones and wandering , forlorn guitar line further exemplifies this, the band unleashing 13 and a half minutes of slow-burning , tortured noise that hints at some severely tortured minds in this lowlands group.

So if you're in the mood for one of the best 'bad' trips you're likely to hear this year, you could do worse than scope out these four gentlemen from Belgium, and sampling some of their unearthly delights..Just don't take the brown acid.Or the black . . .I can't remember which . . .

Rating: 9/10
