Beef Supreme are a desert/stoner rock outfit from Phoenix , Arizona who deal in the sort of scuzzy , hard edged, driving rock that the likes of Fu Manchu and Fireball Ministry used to do so well. The band themselves are a happy by-product of the Bandcamp age, offering all their music as free downloads(try it sometime, all you fledgling teenage bands offering your music to me exclusively on a cassette tape and asking me to pay for the privilege, cheeky pups).
Having played together since 2007, the band have managed to forge a unique sound, a sort of proto-stoner-pop-rock hybrid, with front woman Niki Belgrande's soaring vocals welded to tar thick drop-tuned riffage , resulting in a heavy , infectious collection of hard rock songs that fall somewhere between the aggressive desert sound of We Must Obey' era Fu Manchu and the harder moments of Geordie legends The Wildhearts. Obviously Belgrande's vocals act as a unique selling point for the band, and although she's not the most diverse of vocalists, she holds her own, and it is refreshing to hear more of a female presence in a predominantly male dominated scene.Don't take to mean a softer approach in the slightest though, as this is probably one of the heavier weighted releases of this ilk you'll hear this year.In terms of production , things are played raw and fat free, Belgrande's fat, overpowering tone meshing wonderfully with the grisly overdriven bass noise of Macho Grande, the band making a hell of a noise for a trio.
All in all, this is one that might take a while to grow on you, but if you're in the mood for something a little unconventional that rocks like a bastard, you could do far worse than Royal Bitch.
